Mike @1977 Wheeling Civic Cntr,Wheeling WV...Opening act DONOVAN(They Call Me Mellow Yellow) GFTO tour. The stage was three tiers high with a small one at the top for Jon to stand on when they lowered his harp from the ceiling. At the cue point in CTTE where the music has the descending Moog arpeggio and the three count keyboard leading to the machine-like sounding refrain, Wakeman tripped on his way from the second tier and nearly fell. The resulting cue as he saved himself by catching the lower tier of keys resulted in a blairing "honk..honk..honk" as a result of stage antics "gone haywire". Later, during a beautiful unknown piano/gtr duet with Howe, Steve got carried away and moved too far towards Rick, unplugging the 1/8th inch mini plug from his Barcus Berry gtr pickup, totally silencing the gtr. Wakeman kept going while a frantic roadie found the cord and plugged it back in. I realized they were mortal at this show... Julie Sunderman I was at the Wheeling show, It was such a different atmosphere as the audience were different than your big city type. I wondered at the time if the band felt the different energy as well, but it still was a very good show and the audience received them with much excitement. Donald Custer They palyed before about 5000 people in street clothes. No huge stage production and very apprehensive about the whole gig. They played 'Going for the One" and Anderson had some trouble with the high notes, and I saw them a couple of times later in the tour and the song was dropped. |
