This is a very important show in Yes history. ...it is the first show a very young Billy Sherwood went to.
After the show he told me when he grew up he was going to play with them. ..and HE DID

Yes has and forever will be my favorite band.
When I was 16 I went with my high school science class on a field trip from North Ogden Utah to Edwards Air Force Base in California. We went to watch them test fly the new Space Shuttle off of a 747. I was 16 at the time and my best friend who was also a yes fanatic was on the trip.

On the way home the bus driver decided to drive down the Las Vegas Strip. The bus stopped at a stoplight right in front of the Aladdin. The marquis said that Yes was in concert tonight. My friend and I looked at each other and opened the back hatch on the school bus. We jumped and ran. After successfully ditching those chasing us we made our way to the box office only to be informed that the show was sold out. We begged and pleaded with the guy behind the glass and told him what we had done. He made a quick call and we thought the police would come for us. A security guard from the hotel came and got us and took us behind the security fence in front of the stage. They made us climb over the fence and we fell into the crowd not 10 feet from Rick Wakeman. It was the most memorable concert of my life.

After the show I called my Mom, told her we missed the bus and hitched the 450 miles home across the desert. Great pain and retribution awaited us at home but it was worth it and I'd do it again if I had the chance.

I've seen yes nearly 50 times since, but I'll always remember the Going for the One Tour.
We certainly went for it!

I was bummed as well that they were not hitting Phoenix again is 77 as I had seen them there in both 75 & 76. I drove the 278 miles from Cottonwood, Az to Las Vegas and it was more than worth the trip! While waiting for the show I won $50 on a nickel slot and that paid for a room for the night! I was not too keen on Donovan as opener but was pleasently suprised by him. YES, of course, was stunning as usual. Was the first I'd seen of the huge triple-neck bass that Chris played. I did not see them again until 1984 in Boise, Idaho, and (sniff) have not seen them since.

I was absolutely sure Yes was coming to Salt Lake for this tour - but no. When I heard the tour's closest stop was Vegas, I moped around for weeks, still hoping that the band would swing back around in the spring, like they usually do. Their previous visit to Salt Lake was truly a huge hit so it just seemed like an obvious choice. I still don't know why we were overlooked. The local FM station (Stereo X) played Going For the One in its entirety the week it was released and continued to play the title track and Parallels in heavy rotation for months - along with the usual Yes classics. I bought the album the day after I heard it and wore it out - vinyl you know.

Yes did return to Salt Lake again but not until 1984. The 90125 tour landed on 09-25 of that year - so that was pretty cool.

Jon, call me. You've some 'splainin' to do young man!
