Justin Norman I was there at this show. I went by myself. I remember seeing Geoff Downes and John Payne (asia's lead singer/bass player)in the bar after the gig. Awesome sound at St. Davids hall. It was the first time i'd seen a live performance at this venue. I couldn't belive how high up i was in the stalls. Great concert which funnily seemed to go on all night. It felt like i was there for hrs and hrs. Still i wasn't complaining. It was great to see such epics like Gates and Ritual performed live. That was and probably will be the only time i witnessed them 2 tracks together right before my very eyes. Meng Fantastic!!!! Sublime!!!! Bloody good stuff!!!! I was approaching this concert with some trepidation as I'm not that keen on Magnification, but I needn't have worried. This was the best since the Union tour and quite possibly the best since the Seventies. What particularly struck me was what a good time everyone was having, particularly Anderson, Brislin, the lighting bloke and especially the orchestra. It helped, of course, that the latter seemed to consist mainly of young attractive females, and not a bunch of old farts dressed in evening suits wishing they were somewhere else. There was plenty of foot tapping and unchoreographed swaying from side to side and even dayglo stick clicking during Ritual. This was one bunch of Belarusians having a whale of a time! I'll not go into the individual tracks - it's all been said. If memory serves the setlist was the same as London except for Howe doing Mood for a Day and Clap. Suffice to say that they were peerless 30 years ago and remain so to this day. And yes, we got Gates. Finally, I had a seat in the centre of the first tier right behind the mixing desks. When I first got there, there was a piece of paper with what appeared to be a setlist sitting on one of them. I leaned over as far as I could, and read the following: Roundabout; Jon Rap Solo; Cinema; Smoke on the Water; Don't Kill the Whale; Tempus Fugit; Rick Wakeman solo; Free Bird; Going for the One; Sound Chaser; Big Generator; South Side of the Sky & I Am a Camera (1st encores); Five Per Cent for Nothing (2nd encore). These sound engineers - don't you just love 'em! |
