The Goose

Agreed, the absence of Yours is No Disgrace was disappointing. This was one of my first Yes shows so I had to get used to the 80's sound as I was raised on Yes in the 70's (anderson, wakeman, bruford, Howe, etc.). Sorry to say i never really got into Trevor rabin that much, but some of the 80's showed really rocked, incuding this one. I happen to have a fairly decent recording of this show (among many other I taped over the years).

my first yesshow and second concert overall. the first was the jackson's "victory" tour at jfk a week before. i didn't want to go! honest! i wanted yes to be my first! i told the folks, "DO NOT BUY ME A TICKET! THERE'S NO WAY I'M GOING!!" but... they did... and i went. it was a family event you see, and in my house, 14 was still a bit too young to "put your foot down". looking back, i should've totally spazzed out and chained myself to something. damn. anyway, all i remember about the yes concert is where i sat (second level, first row, right next to the stage on chris's side), alan hitting his snare drum so hard it shook, jon asking the audience to sit down for "soon", and oh yeah... BEING COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY!!! when you're young, impressionable, serious about music, and the first concert you WANT to attend happens to be your favorite band... well, you know the feeling. also, it was LOUD. my ears rang for a week!

of course, the next day, i proudly wore my first ever concert shirt. it was the 4th day of freshman year, and all the jitters i had the previous 3 were nearly gone because of the show and that tee. in fact, i passed an upper-classmen (a brick-shithouse of a junior) in the hall who noticed it and said, "that was a great show last night, wasn't it?" after nervously but emphatically agreeing... i sighed with relief and welcomed myself to cooldom.

"Gimmie Some Lovin'" and "Our Song" were cool to hear, but I was bummed they dropped "Yours Is No Disgrace." I tried to get a tape recorder into this show, but didn't get through the pat-down. The security guard was very cool about it, though, and allowed me to return it to my car and re-enter the show. What's amazing to me was that while I couldn't get a Walkman-sized recorder in, a friend of mine was able to get his 35mm camera in, while a third friend smuggled in a large zoom lens. I never asked exactly where he hid that lens...

Little known facts:

The after-concert music the sound crew played while everyone filed out was the "Leave It" 12" dance remix. Also, Casey Young was said to have played additional keyboards from under the stage.
