I was a freshman at UGA that year and remember Frank Zappa playing Stegman...
we snuck in during the sound checks...I have NEVER cussing like that before or since...Elton John, Stephen Stills and the Beach Boys came thru that year too. Leo Kottke, Ry Cooder and Randy Newman all appeared solo and the student union...like a private show.

I know this sounds crazy but the one thing I vividly remember about that show was Rick Wakeman came out on stage holding a tallboy Budweiser cans of beer and set it down on his keyboards. To this day I don’t know why I remember that. I’m writing this on April 22, 2019. I am 65 years old now and I was a freshman at the University of Georgia in 1972-1973. I do remember it was an amazing show and I remember heart of the sunrise being incredible.

The yours is No Disgrace from this show may not be the one from Yessongs. I listened to it. The jam in the middle is a little different. Also, Wikipedia says the Siberian Khatru and Yours Is No Disgrace on Yessongs is from November 15, 1972; Knoxville, Tennessee. The live versions during this era are not to be believed!! Amazing!!!

I love the intro to Heart Of The Sunrise about the local vegetarian snack-bar - so much better than Burger King in Jons opinion.

Can the snack bar be traced?
Does it still exist today?

The Opening Act was a band called TRANQUILITY -- also progressive, also British, and also featuring rich harmony vocals. YES blew the audience away with a set of what seemed the most complicated rock we had ever heard! Forget three chord garage bands, YES had arrived. They recorded the show that night, complete with audience mics. Though I don't know for certain, I believe Yours Is No Disgrace on the original YESSONGS album is from the UGA show. Many years ago, a friend had a boot of the gig and I am pretty sure YIND was the same track -- and the echoing acoustics of the UGA coliseum are apparent especially in the vocals. (I've always wondered what happened to that tape -- and if anyone out there has it, please please please contact me at YESWOLF1@aol.com.)

I also remember that the mirrored ball for the start and finish of Close To The Edge was actually a large mirrored disc mounted on a big aluminum step ladder. Martin Dean was present -- introduced by Jon -- he was running around the sides of the stage and climbing up and down the ladder taking photos -- though I do not believe any of the shots used in the YESSONGS booklet are from that gig. One other thing I remember, too, is how amazed we all were with the amount of beer Rick Wakeman could consume in two hours and still play so incredibly. The posted set list must be incomplete because I am pretty sure it was close to a three hour show. :-)

It's no big deal now, 25 years later, but Yes did appear in Athens, Ga. at the University of Georgia, sometime around late September/Early October (?) of 1972 during the Close to the Edge Tour. I was a sophomore at Georgia that year and I remember the large glass-covered ball suspended from the ceiling. That's about all that I remember,other than it was a truly incredible show!
