When I got to The Ladder tour, I had a tough time. I don't have a lot of great sounding Ladder shows. One of the best sounding ones was this Boston soundboard show. The sound is very crisp and clear, but unfortunately the mix is pretty bad. Igor's keys and Billy's guitar are very prominent in the mix, and Howe's guitar is very soft. For whatever reason, there are not too many really great sounding shows from the tour. I knew I had some old CD's lying down with an audience recording of the same show and decided to go about mixing the audience recording into the soundboard, with the goal of making Steve more prominent in the mix. I started out by ripping the audience CD's and enhancing the mid range EQ in Wavelab in an effort to bring out more of the guitar sound. I then used the soundboard recording as the basis and mixed in the audience recording only during the music parts, instead of trying to mix the whole thing at once. This was done for a variety of reasons, the biggest reason being that my audience CD's were mastered in such a way that fades were added at the beginning and end of every track, probably because whomever I received from the discs from didn't have a burner that did TAO (I believe I received the disc in early 2000, so it was over ten years ago). Another challenge was the fact that the speed didn't match, so for the longer songs it was necessary to sync up the recordings at multiple points to avoid an echo. I was able to bring Howe out more, but he is still soft in places. Also, Billy and Igor are still louder than usual, but overall, I think I was able to create a nicer mix. I was pleased with the results, but wasn't going to post it anywhere because I had remembered Toole Man creating a similar matrix. However, when I checked a number of trade lists, it looks like he only created a surround sound DVD version, and not a standard audio recording that could be played in CD players. I whipped up some artwork, and decided it would be worthwhile to share anyway. Hope you guys enjoy it. MP -- September 2010 Sorry about the lack of source information, especially regarding the audience recording. I know that CosmicQuake posted an audience recording of this show, but I am quite sure that this isn't it. |
