Notes: Recorded from the 11th row, just left of center - thanks to the location, I was lucky to make a GREAT stealth recording. Booboos include nasty level problems just before the start of CTTE, and level problems and a stopped tape in Wondrous Stories. I remastered to hide the worst of these blemishes, patching in 55 seconds of Wondrous Stories from 8-24-01 at Wolf Trap, VA. Hopefully you won't even notice or mind much...
This recording has been circulated previously, but only in a limited fashion, to friends in Mpls and on the Avalon list-server (Roxy Music fans) right after the show. I know a recording of this show circulates in Yes land, and I suspect it may be this recording (having the same Wondrous Stories flaw). At the time, I was very inexperienced at digital mastering, I didn't even normalize the levels. This version sounds MUCH better. I have normalized, patched the flaws (major and minor), and applied a very gentle eq to reduce some of the bass boom and bring the vocals and orchestra into clearer relief. The orchestra shines throughout on this recording, and others have said (thanks, jb) that the relationship between the band and the orchestra seemed to really come together at this show. All in all, I gotta say, I got lucky and came home with a stellar recording of a fabulous show. I hope you think the same.
(The eq was done with the Soundforge paragraphic eq tool, 1.2 db cut at 60 Hz plus or minus .8 octave, and .5 dB boost at 15K Hz plus or minus 1 octave. The bass cut gently reduced the persistant throbbing bass which dominated the original recording, making more room for the orchestra and brightening Chris' tone to approach how it sounded on the night. The mild high-end boost gave clarity to the string section, especially on CTTE and Gates Of Delerium. If I get enough requests I would upload the non-eq'd version, but please listen to this first, and try to imagine wanting more bass and less clarity. And if anyone is still watching and actually cares, this went onto my hard drive through an analog patch cord. Oh, and I edited out two minutes of applause before the encores to make a two-disc show.)
Okay, I really don't have a big ego about this, but to my ears, this sounds like one of the better stealth recordings I've heard of a modern Yes show. If you know of others of this sonic quality or better, please upload them, or at least point me to them!
