This is a recording of the SOUNDCHECK from Tsongas Arena in Lowell, MA from May 15, 2004 -- the afternoon of the concert the band shot for upcoming (and much delayed) "Songs From Tsongas" DVD. The recording lasts about 53 minutes and truth be told, aside from the last track, this will probably only appeal to the most diehard Yes fans. If what I describe below sounds incredibly boring to you, then you're probably right to stay away. If the description sounds like it's right up your alley, then you most likely won't be disappointed. The sound quality is quite good -- the venue was empty except for a tiny handful of lucky people who sat and watched. This was recorded from about 10 rows back, in the center. The first several tracks are mostly Steve Howe checking every guitar he used in the show. It's basically what it sounds like when Steve just picks up a guitar and plays -- lots of noodling on various bits of music, including a snippet of The Beatles' "Across the Universe". Some of it is interesting, some is not. We then move on to Rick Wakeman, who tests out all the various keyboards and their settings. More noodling. Nothing incredibly earth-shattering, though it's still somewhat astounding to hear him walk up to a keyboard and play some really mind blowing runs without really even concentrating. The band eventually gets down to business right around track 16, first rehearsing a couple of the more tricky changes in "Turn of the Century", and finally turning in an excellent 12 1/2 minute version of "Mind Drive". I have taken out most of the dead space where nothing was going on, so that the first part is as interesting as possible. The performance of "Mind Drive" is top notch, though, and the download is worth it for that alone. None of this soundcheck was filmed or recorded professionally so it won't be included in any way as part of the new DVD. As always, please do not trade this as mp3 or any other lossy format. Enjoy! |
