There's much debate about the relevance of the HOF, but I didn't care. It was an opportunity for me to see a classic Yes lineup one last time even though it was bittersweet that Chris Squire was missing. I started recording shows myself about 12 years ago, and while I've recorded Yes 20 times (as well as ARW twice, now known as 'Yes Featuring ARW') over that time period, this was the first (and likely only time) that I got to actually record the classic lineup. I've been waiting all my life for this moment!!! Unfortunately, due to the nature of this event, I wasn't able to score a ticket in a sweet recording spot. I was barely able to get a ticket at all actually, and when I did get one, it was in the upper section and certainly a less than ideal vantage point to get a decent recording. As such, this is probably my worst sounding recording since 2012. It just wasn't loud enough in the upper section. I don't do many arena shows, this was probably the largest venue I've recorded a show, and I was very far from the stage and any speakers. I worked on this show quite a bit using Wavelab, and cleaned it up quite a bit. It really doesn't sound terrible, just not up to my usual quality. Geddy and Alex's induction speech, as well as acceptance speeches from Jon, Trevor, Alan, Steve, and Rick were hard to hear, but are included here anyway. Bill Bruford was on-stage, as well as Chris' wife Scotland, but they didn't get to speak. Tony Kaye wasn't mentioned at all, yet Steve made a point of mentioning how Yes continues to perform with Geoff Downes, Billy Sherwood and Jon Davison (who were all in attendance, but did not appear on stage). I believe Patrick Moraz was there as well. I actually recorded the entire five hour show, and some of the speeches and videos are quite hard to hear, and there was two obnoxious Pearl Jam fans directly to my right. I made them aware I was there for Yes and they were pretty quiet for their section of the show. For the second show in a row, I had a cable disconnect, but that was at the end of the show during Pearl Jam. Unfortunately I did not get the ending Jam where Pearl Jam were joined by Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain and Trevor Rabin for a rendition of "Rockin' The Free World". There are plenty of videos of it on Youtube and a editted version of the whole night will air on HBO later this month. I've got to say this was a unique event, as the styles of some of the performs greatly contrasted each other. I also never imagined I would go to a show that had Yes on the same bill as Snoop Dogg, but there I was! In fact, Snoop took the stage immediately after the Yes performance to induct Tupac Shakur. It was a very long and memorable evening, and a once in a lifetime opportunity, but not anything I would probably ever do again! Artwork is included in the torrent, with photos from the actual show (although I did not take the front cover picture, I stole it from the Internet). PLEASE DO NOT USE AS A SOURCE FOR A MATRIX. Please share this recording in unaltered lossless quality. If you need to remaster, or something, let me know, and I can provide the undedited raw master (without EQ/volume tweaks) for you to use. -- MP April 2017 |
