In my opinion, the recordings were all pretty great. His gear is more high end than mine, and I thought the recordings sounded good as delivered. I wasn't planning on doing anything but tracking them and making some artwork. But the opportunity presented itself, based on the uniform length and the use of the same recorder, that it would be (relatively) simple to make a four source matrix. Curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to do it to see how it sounds. Since each recording was the same, as far as the length was concerned, I didn't have to work to sync them. Each recording could be mixed as-is. I was very pleased with the result, though I did wind up lowering the low/mid frequencies slightly. I guess all that bass adds up! I used equal parts of all four sources (lowering each one 8db prior to mixing, so I wouldn't clip). Unfortunately, I wasn't able to do the matrix in 24 bit. I tried, but hit some software limitations. Each recording was sent to me in three pieces, that were cut exactly the same, except for one recording (the dpa4021 source), which was cut in three pieces but differently than the other three. I would have to reassemble that recording, and cut it the same exact way, but I wasn't able to create a file that large to encompass the whole show in 24 bit using my current version of Wavelab. (This is one of the reasons I haven't yet jumped on the 24 bit bandwagon for my own recordings as of yet). Withthe 16 bit files, I was able to create one file for each show, and mix the entire show at once, as opposed to pieces that would be required to do it in 24 bit using Wavelab. Each recording was recorded from the same position in the venue, as the microphones were all positioned similarly. There is very little crowd distraction, which makes for a nice clean recording. It was very interesting to hear how the tour has progressed since I saw a couple shows early in the tour. Despite the three leads all fighting colds, the band seems so much tighter now. I'm kind of envious of the people getting to see the show later in the tour. Unfortunately, the taper arrived late and the recording starts near the end of "Perpetual Change" and "Cinema" is not included at all. In fact, you can hear the music "fade in" as the taper was walking into the venue and getting closer to his seat. Normally, I would have waited a bit to see if an alternate complete recording turned up that could be used as a patch, but this is the only taper I know recording shows in Salt Lake City, so it's doubtful an alternate source will surface. I have the four indiviual recordings, and can post them in 16 bit and/or 24 bit if requested. Counting this matrix, that would be nine torrents for this one show and it may be a bit of overkill. Artwork is included in the torrent. Unlike my usual artwork, the photos included are not from this show, but from one of the shows I attended earlier this year. -- MP November 2016 |
