I had a ticket to see ARW 9 months earlier at the Masonic in San Francisco on the day after Thanksgiving. My Mom (93 at the time) & I were visiting my daughter & son-in-law in the Bay Area for the holiday and I was planning on BARTing into the City after dinner Friday to see the show while the family played games at home. I drove to the Fremont BART station and got a train into the City, exited at the Powell Street station and hoofed my way up Taylor Street to the venue on Nob Hill. It's only a 7-block walk but this is SF and it's a 260 ft climb up a steep hill (20-25% grade, maybe more in spots). Well, I trudged my way up the hill... Head-down. Slow march. Man-on-a-mission. Man-on-a-mission! Finally, I'm at the top & the Masonic was just another block away. As I approached things didn't seem quite right. The sidewalk in front of the building was quiet and there was clearly no concert buzz in the air. I climbed the empty steps to the main entrance and all was dark inside. There was a notice on the door that said tonight's show was postponed due to an illness in the band (TR had the flu!). REALLY??? I travel 90 minutes (by car, on BART, on foot) only to turn around and travel 90 more minutes to get back to my daughter's. Yep, REALLY!!! The show was rescheduled to a week from Sunday. As the show approached I realized I had no desire to battle the Sunday afternoon traffic returning to the Bay Area from Tahoe/Reno and also face a late night drive back home before the work week even gets started. And so I bailed. To be fair... Ticketmaster refunded the ticket because of the date change. They also sent an email the day of show announcing the postponement. Unfortunately, my TM account was attached to my work email, which I thought I had no reason to check while away from the office for the holiday. Lesson learned... always check show status before hitting the road! To my benefit, the Stockton venue is less than half the driving distance and is an all around easier drive with no Bay Area-bound traffic & no downtown SF hassles. The Bob Hope Theatre is a large ornate 1930s movie palace (seats about 2000) that's been renovated & converted into an event & concert venue. Cool place. A highlight of the show for me was South Side of the Sky, which wasn't played at the rescheduled Masonic show. I'd never seen South Side at my ten previous Yesshows from '75-'97. And it's always great seeing Heart of the Sunrise & Awaken. This was my first Yes show in 20 years. I'm now back aboard the starship & have seen them (or related) five times since. Includes a scan of the show announcement + crappy pics taken with the same iPhone 5s that was recording the show & edited in PowerPoint. Enjoy!! |
