I've been looking for any live yes with songs from before their 1st big commercial success, "the Yes Album", and most of what I've heard from that era of Yes sounds as pathetic for sound as it is good sounding music, other than the BBC sessions official double CD set (which is essential). not this one. Yes played the Beat Club in Bremen, Germany on Jan. 28th, so the Koln one could be from the 26th or 27th of January, since they were in Copenhagen, Denmark on the 25th. they were also in Berlin, Germany on March 27th and 28th, and in Stuttgart on April 16, back in Berlin on June 5th, (apparently they liked Germany alot in 1971) so this could be a few days before one of those, but not likely since I recieved it as "Jan. 1971". No 71 Koln (or Cologne) concert was listed in the etree guide when this was posted, suprising since most of their early gigs were listed. this is some of the very earliest live Bill Bruford I've ever heard (with anyone), and already he sounds like a hall of fame drummer. if it's Bill Bruford (and this is) of course it's gonna sound really good. no matter who else is in there. that's a fact of life. I made sure that track 3 doesn't go into something else since it's quite a long version for "everydays", but it is just a very nice extended version of it. the performances in both these short shows are very enjoyable. I don't know if either one is complete, only that I've yet to hear a yes show with pre-yes album songs that is of more typical length of 71 or 72 yes shows. I think the last 5 tracks are before Howe joined, and definitely before Rick Wakeman joined Yes, since it is almost all music featuring the original yes lineup, way before the lawyers tour, or the big generator or the 9012 live tour or any of that. any live yes featuring music from the 1st 2 yes releases, "yes" and "time and a word" gets my most immediate attention. as the setlist indicates here, only one of these 8 tracks (all good people, from yes album) is not originally heard (in studio form, of course) on one of those 1st 2 records. the sound quality is as good as anything I've heard from this era in an audience recording. these tapers get an A for their efforts here, really good sound for auds from January 1971. Almost too good to believe they are auds until the applause between songs, but even that is not very loud. I reduced a few loud claps to make it sound even better, and spliced a few abruptly cut ends. the taper(s) stopped between a few of the songs, but most are complete, a couple may be missing the 1st note or two. |
