I dug out my tapes and found this gem. This was Alan White's first Yes show and it was also Yes's first show of the first US leg of the Close To Edge tour (got that?). While the recording is not complete and not all that great, it is a piece of Yes history. The story goes that the tour was booked and Bill Bruford got the call from Robert Fripp (King Crimson) and quit Yes. They got Alan White, who at the time was sharing an apartment with Eddy Offord (Yes producer and tour sound guy). White was told he had 3 days to learn the material and he stepped up to the plate. This performance shows the weaknesses of both the new material being played and White being new to all the Yes songs. The band plays fast, but White hangs on. Another surprise from this show is the inclusion of Paul Simon's America.
I'm not sure of the lineage of my tapes as I got them in a trade years ago. Probably at least a 2nd gen, but remarkably not much hiss and pitch was not off that bad either. I did redo the audio to correct ptich, reduce the hollowness of the venue, bring out some bass, and brighten the highs to hear cymbals. The band sounds distant, but loud during the loud passages and almost inaudible during the quiet moments. The taper must have been way far away from the stage. The only good thing about that is that the drums have a slight echo to them so you can hear White in all his glory!
