But I was also mesmerised by John Martyn's opening , and he did sound like he was playing multiple guitars at the same time. It's too bad some of the opening acts weren't recorded as well , because the thought of Martyn's opening is still vividly etched in my mind today. DAN FARRELL THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I'D SEEN YES "LIVE". IT WAS AN AMAZING SHOW ; AND TO HEAR THE WHOLE TOPOGRAPHIC SET BEFORE IT WAS RELEASED !! THE OPENING ACT WAS THE RECENTLY DECEASED JOHN MARTYN ; AND HIS SET WAS EQUALLY AMAZING. HE PLAYED AN ACCOUSTIC SET THAT SOUNDED AS IF THERE WERE SIX GUYS PLAYING. IF ONE COULD ONLY GET A COPY OF THAT WHOLE EVENINGS MUSIC........TRULY A SLICE OF HEAVEN. Leo Lopez originally posted Feb 25 2004 I had never seen Yes, 30 years ago today when I am writing this review I get the opportunity to share it with the rest of the world's Yesfans. There was an opening act; it was just a guy doing an acoustic set, perhaps it was Donovan, not sure. The opening sounds of the Firebird suite introduced YES to the stage as they walked one by one through the fruit of the loom cone designed by Roger Dean as the rest of the stage. Jon and Chris were wearing white, Steve had a kind of middle eastern outfit and Rick wore his golden cape and had the busts of Beethoven and Bach on top of his grand piano. Alan's drum kit was under a "scrab" like figure that opened its wings during the finale of the Ritual. At each side of the scarab were two mini screens that projected mostly mayan motifs and symbols taken from the mayan culture in Chichen Itza and Guatemala where some band members has been exploring. Great show and what a way to start. I'm 50 years old now and have seen 10 Yesshows, this one will always be special. |
