Michael Northrop Todd Rundgren (Utopia) opened this show in Salt Lake - not Gentle Giant. It was their Glass Guitar tour. Yes was amazing. Jon's Olias contribution was a thrill to hear and was probably the show's standout. Chris' Fish Out of Water contributions were amazing also. The stage show was unlike anything I had ever seen. We had what I thought were fairly poor seats but when the show started, it engulfed the entire arena. I fell in love with the band that night. It was 29 years ago and it is still so clear. They played Gates of Delirium and Sound Chaser - two of the most complex songs I've ever heard and two of my favorites. I've seen several Yes performances since but have not heard those songs again in concert. I bought the live album, YesShows a few months later, hoping it would revive my memories of that spectacular event. It was a bit disappointing. Once you've heard "Gates" at concert-level volume, the old bedroom stereo just won't do. |
