I then used their dropdown menu EQ and Filters to go to Bass and Treble, where I reduced Treble by -0.8. The final step was their Volume and Compression dropdown where I started with their Gentle Compression setting, in which I retained their levels, except for Make Up Gain, which I raised to 1.2. ////////// John Schwetje notes, Feb 2026: What's being offered here is motivated by the release today of the giant Tales box set by Rhino, and the prospect that it includes some "better" live versions of Tales material recorded just after the release of that album. I've loved Tales since it was released, and it is an absolute DID for me. I saw 2 NYC area shows on the Tales tour, this one at Nassau Coliseum, and another at Madison Square Garden (2/18). I know that shows from those NYC area dates have been widely shared over the years. This TooleMan 2006 master of the Nassau show was grabbed at Forgotten Yesterdays some time back, and TheTooleMan is obviously one of the big names responsible for fine work on Yes shows. Forgotten Yesterdays includes 8 separate versions from 2 MSG shows, but there's nothing from Nassau that's more recent than the 2006 work done by Shaun Toole that's the source for this 2026 share. He'd alluded to another possibly forthcoming version from a 2nd capture that included a 2nd encore, but I've never come across that. The Nassau show has a 4 (out of 5) quality rating at FY, and it is a fine listen, despite battery/tape speed and tape flip issues that were treated as best as Shaun could. I recently pulled that show out and listened to it in anticipation of the Rhino box. I was impressed, but also wondered if I might now be able to do anything sonically to give it even a little more clarity. Audacity has yielded good results for me in doing that kind of thing. I've uploaded many shows in recent years that were worked in Audacity, and they've generally gotten good reactions. That speculation relative to this Nassau show led me to try a few things that wound up sounding good to my ear, so I went a little further with what I was doing, and extended it to the whole show. The results are now "going live" here through these minor tweaks being applied to the fine work done 20 years ago by TheTooleMan. My general hope was to bring out some more highs without sacrificing the depth already there. At the same time, the higher dynamics (e.g. at the start of And You and I) had distorted a bit, so that too became a focus. In the end, I became happy enough to consider braving any slings and arrows that might come from some quarters for these new efforts. I'm providing comparative samples, so before/after listening tests can be done to help decide whether this is worth a DL or not. A very minor difference also now exists in tracking between this and earlier shares. Tracks 5 and 7 here had once been presented in 2 parts around a tape change, and that resulted in 13 separate tracks to presumably be burned over 2 cd-r's. Revealing Science and The Ancient are now single tracks, despite that tape flip still being there. Short separate tracks of spoken intros from Jon Anderson before Revealing Science and The Remembering were also incorporated into the tracks that preceded them. The spoken intros appeared before the Ancient and Ritual too, but weren't tracked separately. For the sake of uniformity, those spoken sections are no longer stand alone tracks. The occasional, and sometimes laughable, conversations picked up near the recorder will still be heard between songs (like when Jon A is doing an intro), and the speed shifts that TheTooleMan couldn't address are still present. That said, having been in that particular audience on that particular night, this is definitely one of the better Tales shows you'll hear, and you're getting all 4 sides of the album prior to The Remembering being dropped. Finally, I have to add that I lived (and still do) a little over an hour east of the Nassau Coliseum. I went to this show with a few friends. We were high school seniors, and part of what happened that night remind me that these weren't uniformly "good old days"". Unfortunately, one of those friends was arrested about 5 feet away from me in a restroom before the show started. He had an unlit joint in his hand, and some plainclothes Nassau County police officers were happy to bring him misery for that. I'm guessing that put a damper on our moods for a bit (and gave my friend a criminal record in those days). I can't recall now how that particular tale played out for us after the show that night, but it's nice to know that the music of Yes gave us as positive and majestic backdrop to those dramas as you'll hear here. Many thanks to TheTooleMan, and those he cites in his words copied pasted in below from the page on Forgotten Yesterdays (where some nice artwork to accompany the earlier version of the show's tracking may still be found): ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TooleMan 2006 info: Recorded by Tom on a Sony mono cassette recorder with built-in mic (Yours Is No Disgrace was played as a second encore at this show, but was not recorded by Tom) Tape transfer by Joey 11/2006 Mastered for CD by TheTooleMan 12/2006 I was excited and honored when Fred contacted me with news that his friend Tom had an uncirculated recording of a Yes concert which was thought to have never been recorded. Would I like to have a shot at mastering it and presenting it to the world? YES! Fred sent me a copy of the recording that was made on a stand-alone CD recorder. While the audio quality was good, I was disappointed to find that the original tapes have considerable speed irregularities, probably resulting from low batteries. The original tapes were transferred again by Joey, who created a 24-bit 48 kHz digital version. I applied speed correction, EQ, and dynamics with Sound Forge and Vegas. Considerable work went into correcting the random speed changes, and I could probably spend the rest of my life correcting every minor speed fluctuation in this recording. While I was able to fix most of the major problems, some wow and flutter remains. Roundabout suffers the most, and was very difficult to correct. I added an effect to the end of the song to characterize the exhausted batteries dying on the final note. Now for the even more exciting news: Fred also recorded the same show. It will be seeing the light of day soon, after 30 years of storage. I am hopeful it will be of better quality overall, although this recording is quite listenable as it is now.
